92Y’s Art Center offers a wide variety of afterschool and weekend visual art classes for children/teens ages 4 – 17. The Art Center welcomes over 300 children and teens each semester with classes led by Teaching Artists. The 92Y’s Art Center Teaching Assistant Program offers participants a hands-on classroom experience that provides tools and techniques for working in the field of visual art education.
Teaching Assistants work in a mentorship relationship with seasoned Art Center children’s faculty who understand the 92Y Art Center’s pedagogy as well as classroom development and management. Teaching Assistants work directly with Teaching Artists by providing assistance to students and fostering a creative learning environment. Opportunities are given towards the end of the semester for Teaching Assistants to develop and lead a lesson with mentor.
Education, Skills and Experience
The ideal Teaching Assistant is currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in visual arts education or possess a BFA in visual arts and is looking to gain teaching experience. Candidates should enjoy working with children in a creative classroom setting. Teaching Assistants must make a commitment to the full semester, attending every scheduled class and finding substitutes from Art Center roster for the classes they cannot attend. Absences are strongly discouraged.
Compensation & Benefits:
Afterschool and Weekend children/teen classes meet weekly and are held for 1 ½ - 2 hours depending on the class schedule. Compensation is $20/hr. Teaching Assistants are compensated for 15 minutes of prep and 15 minutes of clean up per class in addition to the duration of the class.
At the start of semester, Teaching Assistants, must attend an orientation with Art Center’s Program Managers and Director to review policies, procedures, and overall goals for the program. In addition to the orientation, there will be four mandatory touch point meetings scheduled throughout the semester. Teaching Assistants are required to attend at minimum one group meeting and one individual meeting throughout the semester. Group meetings will include free professional development workshops. Individual meetings will allow Teaching Assistants to participate in a dialogue about pedagogy and best practices and to receive constructive feedback from Art Center staff, which is integral to developing one’s skill. Participants in the program are eligible for one free Art Center class or workshop per semester.
