Administrative Assistant - Industrial Hygiene


The Industrial Hygiene (IH) Technician reports directly to the Senior Industrial Hygienist within the Risk Management and Safety Department. For certain responsibilities and duties on the job training is provided. The IH Technician assists the Senior IH with his primary duties which include managing and developing the following:

  • Asbestos and heavy metal remediation activities on campus
  • Confined Space Safety program
  • Inspection and calibration of fixed and portable gas detection systems
  • Respiratory protection program including fit testing
  • Inspection and testing of a variety of ventilation control systems.
  • Ergonomics

Additional shared duties include: assisting with exposure assessments; calibrating sampling equipment; placing sampling equipment on employees, pre- and post-calibration of pumps, recording workplace observations for IH investigations, assisting with asbestos clearance sampling, noise surveys, sample prep and shipping, delivering samples and assisting the Senior IH with training. Some programs may require the occasional use of a hammer, electric drill, and various hand tools. The confined space program requires the occasional use of a magnetic lifting device to remove and manipulate steel covers.

Additionally this position is responsible for supervising student employees which includes:

  • Managing student schedules, ensuring that students do not work over the maximum allotted hours each week.
  • Handling student employee hiring and training
  • Supervising student employees to ensure that they caught up with all assigned responsibilities
  • Conducting weekly meetings with IH group to discuss issues pertaining to IH specifically as well as changes within the Risk Management and Safety department as a whole.

The IH Technician is responsible for IH record keeping which requires the use of several electronic databases.



  • Associate degree in a field related to health, science, engineering or technology, OR 1 year of part time or full time work experience related to safety or Industrial Hygiene
  • Valid driver license
  • Ability to work as a member of a team

  • Computer proficiency
  • Ability to work unsupervised and independently
  • Ability to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment
  • Must be able to interact productively with employees and supervisors


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 1 year of work experience related to Industrial Hygiene or safety
  • Knowledge of Industrial Hygiene
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to learn new software programs

Employee Class: 3/4 Time (28 hour)Work Location: Provo CampusEnvironment: Frequent exposure to unfavorable conditions such as all-weather, or working in cramped, very dirty, or unpleasant quartersPhysical Exam Required: YPhysical Exam Details: Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions. Typical Physical Efforts, Environmental Factors, and Hazards include:

  • Entering utility areas of campus where high noise and other hazards are present; 1 hour, 1 time per day; PPE: Hearing protection, Respiratory protection, Eye protection, Head protection, Foot protection
  • Collecting samples in multiple areas on campus; 1 hour, 1 time per day; PPE: Hearing protection, Respiratory protection, Eye protection, Head protection, Foot protection
  • Transporting IH related equipment (20-50lbs); 1 hour, 1 time per day; PPE: Foot protection
