The Office of Enrollment and the Student Experience is a mission-driven organization providing a cohesive experience throughout all phases of the student lifecycle, from the admissions and enrollment process through graduation and beyond, by supporting a connected, comprehensive and student-centered approach to the student experience.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director, the Compliance and Training Officer, Financial Aid is responsible for ensuring adherence to federal, state and institutional regulations relating to student financial aid. The Compliance and Training Officer, Financial Aid serves as GWU’s key resource for educating and training on regulations and compliant processes related to student financial aid. The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) administers over $430 million in financial aid (institutional grants and federal loans combined) to undergraduate and graduate students. responsible for ensuring adherence to federal, state and institutional regulations relating to student financial aid.

The Compliance & Training Officer, Financial Aid serves as GWU’s key resource for educating and training on regulations and compliant processes related to student financial aid.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Assures regulatory compliance pertaining to federal and state student aid programs through provision of thorough and timely training and development and implementation of appropriate processes and procedures.
  • Remains current on all federal and institutional regulations.
  • Liaises with GW financial aid community to ensure financial aid compliance is executed effectively across the university.
  • Identifies potential areas of vulnerability and risk.
  • Identifies areas of non-compliance with financial aid regulations, spearheading recommendations of appropriate corrective actions to manager and mitigate risk.
  • Establishes standards and implements procedures to monitor and identify noncompliance with applicable rules and regulations.
  • Monitors federal notices of proposed rulemaking for financial aid.
  • Reviews and interprets rules impacting GWU and prepares responses where appropriate.
  • Coordinates audit activities with auditors and executes audit plan.
  • Conducts regular file reviews and coordinates findings with appropriate stakeholders.
  • Coordinates training of Office of Financial Aid staff and other relevant colleagues. through workshops and webinars on federal and institutional financial aid requirements.
  • Develops and maintains financial aid compliance training manual and handbook for the office.
  • Coordinates with HR on new employee onboarding.
  • Develops and implements a compliance calendar to provide appropriate oversight and control enterprise-wide compliance activities.
  • Works with financial aid staff to ensure accurate documentation of policies and procedures for the administration of the federal Title IV, Title VII and State programs.
  • Coordinates, prepares, and reviews regular reports to measure financial aid program compliance.
  • Partners with Director, to establish policies that are related to Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
  • Ensures compliance with NCAA applicable Division regulations.
  • Ensures both the accessibility of financial aid information on the GW website and timely delivery of the required student financial aid information notifications to current and prospective students and employees.
  • Monitors all GW websites, publications, and other communications for compliance with GW policies and procedures.
  • Participates in the review process for all materials disseminated to members of the University community related to federal aid and education financing.
  • Creates and maintains effective communication plans in collaboration with communications staff, for transmitting and receiving critical data inter-departmentally and to and from key University offices such as admissions, registrar, Colonial Student Services and schools.
  • Coordinates appropriate framework for financial aid presentations including entrance and exit loan counseling.

The position is based at GW’s Virginia Science and Technology Campus in Virginia. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree preferred and 2 years of progressively responsible experience in Higher Education, specifically in a financial aid office.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs including trends in the field of financial aid.
  • Working knowledge of the regulatory environment affecting student financial aid preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise in identifying and analyzing complex compliance issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively and concisely to different stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess risk and provide prudent advice.
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to work expediently and professionally with multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience and skills in the use of technological tools and systems used to support and deliver financial aid programs and services to students.
  • Focuses on customer’s needs (a customer can be a student, parent, colleague, external constituent) and expectations.
  • Promptly respond to customer’s requesting information, takes appropriate action, or refers customer to appropriate individual or department.
  • If further actions are needed, advises customers of realistic timeframes for a response to their request.
  • Ability to think strategically and initiate solutions where necessary.
  • Takes responsibility to accomplish job assignments within reasonable deadlines.
  • Willingness to accept new commitments.
  • Does due diligence to complete projects within specified timeframes.
