The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. A Group Manager position is available in NREL's Materials Science Center to lead the Analytical Microscopy and Imaging Sciences Group. The group contributes across the full materials science portfolio and applies and advances a range of transmission/scanning electron, scanning probe and optical imaging techniques to measure chemical, structural, morphological, electrical, interfacial, and luminescent properties over macro to Angstrom scales. The candidate will provide scientific and strategic leadership and mentoring to a group consisting of scientists, engineers, technical staff and postdoctoral researchers and students.
Key knowledge includes expertise in a range of microscopy and imaging techniques and their application to research in a broad range of materials science for renewable energy and advanced energy technologies. It is expected that this experience will be leveraged to lead and contribute to programs in photovoltaics, battery materials, fuel cells, wide bandgap semiconductors for power electronics, and hydrogen storage, as well as growing efforts in quantum materials, biohybrid materials and high throughput materials science.
Qualified candidates must demonstrate the ability to provide a high level of technical expertise and vision to build on and advance the Group’s reputation for leadership in microscopy and imaging science for renewable energy technologies. Strong interpersonal skills are required to represent NREL to a wide range of stakeholders and to provide dynamic leadership for the future. Strengths required in interpreting and assessing the experimental results and connecting materials growth, characterization and device performance. Excellent interpersonal as well as oral and written communication skills are essential for success at NREL.
Candidates must demonstrate a track record of successful independent research, program management and strategic planning experience and will be responsible for advancing and maintaining a safe and secure work environment. Successful applicants will demonstrate the ability to recruit and retain outstanding talent, support a diverse workforce, provide strategic direction for business development and oversee proposal activity for a large range of sponsors, particularly the Department of Energy/EERE but also industry and university partners.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Materials Science Center and Materials and Chemical Sciences Directorate leadership to identify and develop new capabilities and steward existing infrastructure. The group manager will be responsible for continuing and advancing the Analytical Microscopy and Imaging Sciences group as a key contributor to the broader NREL S&T strategy through strategic interactions throughout the Directorate and with other Directorates at NREL.
.Basic Qualifications Previous management, budget development and/or significant leadership in an individual contributor role required. Degree in appropriate field is required. Demonstrated skill in dealing with legal and ethical management issues and practices. Broad and in-depth knowledge of the issues and best practices in the applicable field of expertise. Excellent organization, project management, budgeting, interpersonal and communication skills. Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills. Ability to collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management.
.Additional Required Qualifications
Relevant PhD and 10 or more years of experience. Applies extensive scientific technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource. Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Knowledge of the principles underlying electronic, thermal and structural properties of materials, as well as expertise in microscopy and imaging, broadly defined. Demonstrated ability to mentor staff, postdoctoral scientists and students. Demonstrated ability to develop and advance new analytical approaches to address particular challenges for energy-related devices is a plus.
PhD. in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry or related field. Strong record of publications/presentations in areas relevant to NREL projects.
