The Patient Advocate is administratively responsible for resolving patient and family concerns and grievances according to regulatory agency standards. This individual is a part of the healthcare team and a designated liaison between patients, families, visitors, and hospital staff and administration. The Patient Advocate facilitates communication and involves staff in resolving issues related to the hospital experience by establishing an avenue for negotiation to occur. This person investigates patient/family concerns and collaborates with the Risk Manager regarding care issues and possible litigation. As a member of the staff advocacy team, the Patient Advocate is a crisis intervention responder to disruptive patients, families and visitors. The Patient Advocate maintains documentation and provides trending information for use in quality improvement initiatives. The Patient Advocate promotes compliance with patient rights and responsibilities, as well as patient/family centered care.
